Farm Dweller Programme

The Farm Dweller Programme covers the geographical areas of the Northern and Western Cape stretched over the West Coast and Hantam Karoo municipal areas. Farm dwellers in our new democracy are faced with continued evictions, new forms of dispossession, violence, human rights abuses and rural displacement. They are amongst the poorest and most vulnerable sectors of our society that are faced with a myriad of development challenges.

SPP believes that the problems of farm dwellers cannot be addressed without a fundamental restructuring of the agricultural economy. Farm dwellers are pushed to the margins of society and dislocated from broader agrarian reform in South Africa. Unequal social, political power relations remain intact.

The Farm Dweller Programme focuses on:
Facilitating access to land and strengthening the long term tenure security of farm dwellers as well as access to land for productive use to improve their livelihoods.

Supporting the building of farm dweller organisations to resist human rights violations and evictions from farms as well as mobilization activities.

Advocating and lobbying for appropriate legislation that protect the rights of farm dwellers and rural transformation.

Initiating and supporting campaigns that advocate for an end to evictions of farm dwellers.

Farm dweller problems can only be solved by means of agrarian reform of which agricultural reform should be an integral part.
