Background
The Surplus People Project (SPP) has during the 1980's been able to publicize as well as support communities to resist the violence of forced removals. This culminated in the publication of the seminal five volume SPP reports documenting some of these forced removals.
During the past 23 years SPP has been able to register and demonstrate many
achievements that contributed towards the improvement of the socio-economic conditions of men and women:
Instrumental in the mobilisation of communities in the Namaqualand district which resulted in the transfer of 400000 hectares of land and tenure reform.
Involved in the mobilisation of the community of Elandskloof that resulted in land transfer to community in one of the first restitution claims settled in 1996.
In 2003 able to mobilize communities and civil society organisations to march against the limited budget and slow pace of land reform in the Western Cape.
Assisted more than 60 organisations through social mobilization and development practice to gain access to private and municipal commonage land.
Continued to resist the evictions of farm dwellers and building the organisation of farm dwellers, women and small-scale farmers.
In 2008 able to mobilize over 800 rural farm dwellers and emerging farmers, in partnership with other civil society partners, to march against the slow pace of land and agrarian reform.
